Sonido Cachimbo

Sonido Cachimbo

Sonido Cachimbo is a cumbia project born in Ciudad Juárez, México, and rooted in the lived experience of the Juárez–El Paso border region. Formed in the early 2010s amid a context marked by violence, migration, and social fragmentation, the project transforms those realities into an energetic and celebratory sound grounded in popular dance traditions. Blending cumbia with elements of rock, punk, and other hybrid influences, Sonido Cachimbo creates music that invites collective joy while carrying the memory and resilience of border communities. Their live performances are known for their high energy, festive atmosphere, and strong connection with diverse audiences on both sides of the border. The project has released two full-length albums, Tropicumbia Fronteriza (2014) and Fiesta Popular (2017), the latter co-produced by Rodrigo Rojas of the Chilean band Juanafe, and has collaborated with artists such as Clemente Castillo (Jumbo), Edna Nao, and Paulina del Campo. In 2024, Sonido Cachimbo released “Monitor,” a reinterpretation of the song by Volován. The group is currently working on a new EP of original material planned for vinyl release.
