Having traversed a long and winding path to her present-day level of acclaim, Goldie Boutilier weaves vivid, unflinching narratives of the sordid daybreak aftermath that follows the surface level glamour of high society nightlife. Set to an electrifying current, the result is danceable pop songs with sugary hooks with gravitas and depth of feeling. Reinvention comes naturally to Boutilier, who eventually began working under her own name during a period of reflection at home on Cape Breton Island after years spent in LA and Europe. She navigated the pop world while abroad, releasing My Name Is Kay on Interscope in 2011, before working and recording as a club DJ under the name Goldilox. Her work since her 2020 transformation into Goldie has found Boutilier showing a wide range as a songwriter. Her 2022 EP Cowboy Gangster Politician leaned into forward thinking country rock, with ’60s pop elements scattered throughout, while hinting at a future sonic direction. On her latest, Goldie Boutilier Presents Goldie Montana, Boutilier's fearless lyrics and sultry, danceable grooves lend theatricality and anthemic drama to tender moments of intense vulnerability. They represent another reinvention in Goldie Boutilier's career; both an ingenue and femme fatale, bridging the gulf between starlet and troubadour. - Mike Dunn
